Intro to Small Scale Pig Production
Bringing a new animal home is an exciting time! If you have never raised pigs before, you may be thinking, “What do I do with them now?” Even if this isn’t your first time raising pigs, you may have questions about feeding or management. Take some time to look through the resources and information in this package. Note that it is intended for those raising weaned pigs through growing and finishing to slaughter weight and does not contain much detail on the management of sows, breeding or farrowing.
We have included basic information on housing, management, nutrition/feeding and health, along with what you need to know for slaughter time and PigTrace, Canada’s national hog traceability program. Additionally, we have included the summary information on the requirements from the Code of Practice for the Care and Handling of Pigs developed by the National Farm Animal Care Council, as well as information on biosecurity for livestock producers.
Whether you have two pigs, twenty, or two hundred, it is important for you to be aware of the management and welfare requirements of the industry, and of the traceability requirements for movement of animals and slaughter.
